Seven specialised teams are active within the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Sonnenenergie e.V. and focus their work on different subject fields. Their professional knowledge allows the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Sonnenenergie e.V. to play an active and competent role also in technical discussions. Further on, the work of the expert committee constantly provides current and highly-specialized information relevant to decision makers and the population.

The DGS is the oldest nationwide non-profit solar organisation in Germany. With almost 3000 members it is also one of the largest organisations in the field of renewable energies. The DGS aims provide both, information and education on renewable energy aspects to the public. Reflecting the broad range of goals to which the DGS is committed, members of the DGS stem from all kind of classes of the society. Some of them are more or less directly working in the field of solar energy or energy efficiency while others sacrifice their spare time to the topic.

Another group of members identify themselves with the overall goal of the society – a sustainable energy policy – and support the DGS through their membership fees. The DGS sees itself as an independent voice, which provides expert knowledge to the individual as an end consumer as well as to the trade and industry which sell energy intensive products. DGS common goal is to accelerate the market penetration of these technologies.

The DGS has a strong base in education, standardisation and conception of regional energy concepts. The DGS is currently chairing quality assurance committee for solar technology in Germany and is conducting numerous congresses the latest being the International EuroSun2004 www.eurosun2004.de in Freiburg. There a large focus was laid by the DGS on the creation of suitable renewable energy projects for developing countries.

Another key activity is the publication of the magazine “SONNENENERGIE”. A free subscription to the magazine is part of the DGS membership. SONNENENERGIE has earned a reputation as a journal of high scientific content.

On an organisational scheme, the DGS is divided into state wide entities, regional section and national advisory panels. At the moment, the following advisory panels are active: solar education; biomass; simulation; solar building design and solar thermal.

The DGS has a proven track record of effectively managing large and small cooperation networks and projects on the national and international level. Among the latest projects were the creation of multilingual bio energy, solar thermal and photovoltaic guidebooks (English, Spanish, Portuguese, German, Italian), two international networks (energy in agriculture and small scale cogeneration) as well as a running project for renewable energy in school education.

2004 Energiestiftung Schleswig-Holstein was merged with Technologiestiftung Schleswig-Holstein to Innovationsstiftung Schleswig-Holstein. It is a public-law foundation with legal capacity. One of the tasks of Innovationsstiftung is to research, develop and disseminate knowledge and activities in the field ofclimate protection, efficient use of energy and the reduction of CO2-emissions, with special reference to the efficient energy use, energy conversion and renewable energies.

In this continuing role Innovationsstiftung is dealing with all aspects of activities concerning energy conservation and use of renewables, ranging from demonstration of new energy efficient technologies up to organisational and administrative measures. Evaluation of project, programmes and policy strategies and development of new measures and instruments are the important parts of the Innovationsstiftung's expertise provided to national and international clients.

Innovationsstiftung respective Energiestiftung (now merged) has long experiences in developing and implementing programmes, measures and instruments concerning rational use of energy and use of renewable energy sources. Normally proposals for various target groups were developed in connection with precedent investigations on the particular problem to be solved.

Another field of action is the organisation and execution of seminars, workshops and meetings. Two big regional marketing campaigns in the field of energy saving and presently two marketing campaigns in the field of renewable energies have been performed. According to its founding act the Innovationsstiftung's responsibilities are to develop strategies for the implementation of an efficient and sustainable energy systems, to support innovative energy technologies and to serve as objective and expert-based forum for negotiations between public and private actors in energy sector. This includes monitoring the international developments, accumulating the knowledge and expertise on market measures and instruments being already applied or to be applied so as to fulfil the Innovationsstiftung's mission. By evaluation of the measures and programmes the Innovationsstiftung accumulated a huge knowledge on how to define valuable evaluation indicators and how to interpret them i. e. to identify the direct and indirect impacts.

Innovationsstiftung has extensive contacts not only to the public and private organisations in the energy field in Germany but co-operates also with numerous regional and international institutions and organisations active in this field. It is further familiar with all methods of organising events, producing information material and establishing networks. Some employees are trained on moderating techniques.

One of the most important targets to be achieved by the Innovationsstiftung is to provide clear and objective expertise on specific problem to any client, public or private, national or international. This includes presentation of results, organisation of conferences, workshops, seminars and forums. The Innovationsstiftung has contacts with the main public and private actors in the energy field in the region and in Germany and due to the international activities also to a huge number of such actors abroad. The staff being involved in the projects granted by the Commission’s programmes is well experienced in presenting the results on occasions (seminars, conferences, workshops) organised by or on the behalf of the Commission.

Innovationsstiftung respective Energiestiftung (now merged) was involved in more than 20 international projects. Co-ordinating (lead partner) more than 10 such projects the Energiestiftung proved its ability for high quality management of projects toping in managing the consortium of partners coming from as many as ten different countries.

It was 15 years ago that Gerhard Valentin took the plunge to leave the Technical University in Berlin and start up his own business. The reason for entering the turbulent waters of commercial life was the confidence that he had in his fledgling software program T*SOL – one of the first programs of its kind.

This year, Valentin Energy Software moved into its brand new offices in the International Solar Center on Berlin´s river Spree, where Gerhard Valentin is proud to now manage a team of ten staff, who have helped him turn the company into a truly international concern.

T*SOL, the design and simulation program for solar thermal systems, which now has extra modules for swimming pool systems and large-scale systems, has undergone constant improvement over the years to take it up to its current Version 4.4. This reflects the extensive experience gained by the company in the highly-developed and competitive solar market in Germany. Responding to their increasingly international client base, the Valentin team has now produced English, French, Italian and Spanish versions, in addition to the original German version.

PV*SOL, for both stand-alone and grid-connected photovoltaic systems, was launched in 1998 and is now up to Version 2.6. PV*SOL represents the state ofthe art n renewable energy simulation and is available in English, Spanish and German, with French and Italian versions due to be released shortly. A special feature of the program is its Quick Design facility, which supports the correct configuration of the system components.

T*SOL and PV*SOL support the work of a wide range of customers, such as: solar consultants, universities, research institutes and training schools. And to ensure that its customers receive the best possible service, the company works with a network of distribution partners in a number of countries. Free demo versions of the programs can be downloaded from www.valentin.de, where full information is also available. Updates of both programs are released twice a year.

Increasingly, Valentin Energy Software is working in partnership with manufacturers to develop software for company-specific applications, as with the joint projects successfully completed for Buderus, Wilo and Viessmann his year. Special company versions of T*SOL and PV*SOL have also been developed for solar system component manufacturers, e.g. of modules or collectors, who wish to promote their products more effectively to their customers.
